Lutnick Confirmed for Commerce Post

The Senate Tuesday evening approved the nomination of financier Howard Lutnick as Commerce Secretary, putting in place a key proponent of President Trump’s trade policy. The nomination was approved by a mostly party line vote of 51 to 45.

Mr. Lutnick has been serving as CEO at the investment firm Cantor Fitzgerald.

At his confirmation hearing before the Senate Commerce Committee, Mr. Lutnick made clear he endorses the President’s ideology on tariffs, including across-the-board tariffs. He also dismissed as “nonsense” the idea that tariffs can lead to inflation.

When he announced Mr. Lutnick’s nomination, President Trump said that his Commerce Secretary will act as his lead on trade policy, raising questions about the role of the US Trade Representative in the second Trump Administration.
