Penny Pritzker to Lead US Recovery Efforts in Ukraine

President Biden announced yesterday he has tapped former Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker for the newly-created position of US Special Representative for Ukraine’s Economic Recovery. 

In her new position, Ms. Pritzker will work with the Ukrainian government, US allies and partners, international financial institutions and the private sector to drive US efforts to help rebuild the Ukrainian economy following Russia’s invasion, according to a White House statement.

This will includes mobilizing public and private investment, shaping donor priorities and working to open export markets and businesses shut down by Russia’s brutal attacks and destruction.

Ms. Pritzker also will work with Ukraine’s other international partners, including via the G7 coordination platform, to ensure that international efforts are complementary and mutually reinforcing, as well as to encourage international partners to keep stepping up their support for Ukraine’s immediate economic recovery needs.

She also will help the Ukrainian government make reforms needed to strengthen its economy. Tracing her roots to the village of Velyki Pritsky outside of Kyiv, Ms. Pritzker's family owned a grain store before emigrating the United States more than 100 years ago.

Ms Pritzker served as Secretary of Commerce from 2013 to 2017,  In that position she was confirmed by a Senate vote of 97-1.   From 2021 to 2022, she was a member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

In addition to a net worth estimated at $3 billion, Ms. Pritzker has a BA from Harvard College and a JD and MBA from Stanford University.
